Will Peta's commercial for the 2011 Superbowl make television? Mmm....probably not, the commercial (a gathering of outtakes for last year's ad) is making waves on the internet and will probably fall into the same category as last year's Peta commercial itself (Veggie Love)--banned. Inside "Glee"

Posted by bloggergal | 1:56 PM | , | 0 comments »

The following story appears in the current issue of The Hollywood Reporter available on newsstands Thursday.

The note was practically a high "A-sharp"; the cacophony of voices blended perfectly to form an instantly recognizable tone, striking the right balance of volume and shrill while conveying contagious enthusiasm. There were big smiles, hearty applause and a collective pat on the back. Only this chorus wasn’t singing on the set of Glee; it was 16 cheering department heads seated around a conference table at the Los Angeles offices of 20th Century Fox Television, the studio that produces the hit Fox show. Piped in via video: another eight team members from Columbia Records in New York.

Welcome to the “Gleekly meeting,” a pep rally during which the many tentacles that tend to the nearly half-billion-dollar brand convene to discuss the latest strategies for what has become the network’s No. 2 priority. Averaging 14 million viewers this season, Glee still trails American Idol by a good 10 million, but it’s inching closer to the juggernaut with each passing day. To wit: By the next morning, Jan. 20, hours after Idol’s premiere ratings would show a season-over-season 13 percent decline, the most prominent ad on the Fox lot facing busy Pico Boulevard suddenly had been switched from Ryan Seacrest and company to the Glee gang.

In some ways, it was a symbolic shift -- if not exactly in ratings supremacy, then in television momentum. And not just any momentum, but the big-network water-cooler kind that’s hard to come by in a world where small cable gets the buzz, even if their shows don’t always get the numbers. If Idol feels like a slightly worn Vegas act that could use new lipstick, Glee still has the freshness of a Year 2 show whose ratings -- and business -- are on the upswing while its audience (average age: 34) remains enviably young.

Just one look around the table at the Gleekly meeting reveals the scope of how mammoth, complicated and promising the show is. In fact, to call it a mere show seems a misnomer. For Glee, gone is the old TV model of making money only off ads (nearly $300,000 per 30-second spot and rising) and syndication. Glee is a brand that, through its inventive packaging of music and the mall-ready charisma of its stars, has redefined how big a TV business can be. Among the participants at the table: the head of consumer products, playing show and tell with the new line of Glee-branded Sephora nail polish; a representative from home entertainment, passing around a Target circular featuring the Season 2, Vol. 1 DVD (the chain accounts for 25% of Glee’s entertainment sales); and vps from publicity, digital (Glee has the No. 1 iPad app) and international, touting the latest numbers out of the U.K., which make Glee the country’s most-watched U.S. series, outperforming Desperate Housewives, Lost and CSI (good news, considering the Glee tour is headed to London’s O2 arena in the summer and promoter Live Nation anticipates successive sellouts). Also on tap: a June reality show on Oxygen awarding a Glee guest role.

Although one gets the feeling that, like their Glee club stars, spontaneous eruptions of claps and “yaaaays” are de rigueur among this ensemble, on this particular Wednesday afternoon, there was even more to cheer about than usual. The show had just won three Golden Globe awards (best television series, comedy or musical, and best supporting actor and actress for Chris Colfer, who plays gay teen Kurt, and Jane Lynch, the school’s acerbic Cheerios coach), was named the No. 1 TV-franchise DVD for 2010 and had recently come off of its biggest music sales month ever, moving 6 million tracks and 1.7 million albums, including a Christmas compilation that went platinum almost overnight. All this while the show was in reruns.

When Glee returns Feb. 6, it does so in a huge way: with television’s biggest lead-in, the Super Bowl and its 100 million-plus viewers, and the promise of a spectacle on the McKinley High football field: zombies, pyrotechnics, people being shot out of cannons, unexpected kisses and a re-enactment of Michael Jackson’s "Thriller." The episode’s tagline says it all: "A big night of passes, fumbles and personal fouls." The message is classic Glee in that you can read it two ways: signature sports-speak or suggestive, hypersexual innuendo. If it works on both fronts, then it’s true to creator Ryan Murphy’s vision for the show, inspired by the movie Election. In his own words, "I wanted it to be for adults and children: subversive but where the double entendres go over the heads of 8-year-olds."

An hour later, on the fifth floor, 20th TV chairmen Dana Walden and Gary Newman are familiarizing themselves with the concert industry as they’re debriefed on the summer tour by Azoff, Geary, Paul Management partner Jared Paul, 20th TV senior vp brand management Mark Pearson and head of music Geoff Bywater. It will be the second outing for the ensemble cast, 14 of whom are contractually bound to participate, after a four-city experiment last year that proved a runaway success. Key among them: stars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Amber Riley and Colfer, who’s not exactly stoked about the physical demands. "My reaction was less enthusiastic than most of the kids because I never had any aspiration to be part of the music world," he says. "It’s also very exhausting, and last time I tore through a ligament in my right leg. But getting that immediate feedback from the fans is an adrenaline high that you can’t really describe."

On this trek, the Gleeks graduate from theaters to arenas, with plans to hit most major U.S. markets, the U.K. and Ireland from May to July. But of all the talk of unfinished work — from merchandising decisions (one of the first items to sell out on Glee’s 2010 summer tour: a $200 replica of the McKinley varsity jacket) to VIP package strategies to scheduling rehearsals around the network upfronts in May -- No. 1 on the agenda was a break for the young stars: three solid Glee-free weeks. "It’s man-da-to-ry," Walden says with den-mother authority.

She has reason to be concerned: Long days and nights are the likely cause for a recent spate of illnesses, passed on from one cast member to the next, throwing off the already tight schedule. "That choir room is like a petri dish these days," Lynch says. "We’ve been dropping like flies the last couple weeks."

Bachelor contestant Michelle Money reveals to Life and Style that she had an affair with NBA star Carlos Boozer — while he was married. Opening up about the scandal for the first time, Michelle tells Life & Style, “Yes, I was in a relationship with Carlos while he was still married. What I did was wrong.”

Michelle, actress and single mother to 5-year-old daughter Brielle, has quickly established herself as one of the most controversial contestants on the new season of The Bachelor. In her quest to win Brad Womack’s heart, her aggressive antics — like storming off the set and forcibly dragging Brad away from other women — have angered and upset many of her fellow housemates. But off-camera, her personal life is even more shocking.

When Michelle first met Carlos, she was a recent divorcee living in Salt Lake City, and he was a star forward on the Utah Jazz. Michelle implies that Carlos led her to believe he had separated — though he didn’t file for divorce until March 2009, while he and Michelle were involved. Michelle tells Life & Style she regrets any part she played in Carlos’ split from wife Cece.

“I should never have been so naive to assume what I was told was true,” Michelle tells Life & Style. “I’m not trying to shy away from the fact that he was still married. I don’t put that on Carlos. I don’t put that on anyone but myself. I feel terrible for Cece for that pain she’s had to go through and that I am a part of it.” Despite Carlos’ split with his wife, he and Michelle ended things in June 2009. “All I can do,” Michelle says, “is try to do better with my life. I screwed up. But I can only try to do the best I can.”

Watching Jersey Shore’s third season, you’ve probably noticed that you’re seeing a whole lot less of Jenni “JWoww” Farley — literally. The Jersey Shore star sat down with Life & Style to share how she cleaned up her act, lost 20 pounds, and two dress sizes in the past seven months. She attributes part of her success to Ab Cuts supplements. “I can fit into the jeans I wore when I was 21!” the 5-foot-7 star, now 25, told Life & Style at the exclusive photo shoot. “Overall, my body’s gotten tighter and more toned.”

Her new look, Jenni says, “Is me coming out of my shell. I want to go back to where I was until I was 21. I was running 3½ miles a day, and I looked amazing. I was very, very health-conscious. And I’d never had a drink.”

This season, JWoww started hitting the gym with the guys and scaled back her partying, limiting herself to lower-cal cocktails like “vodka-seltzer, no cranberry, nothing fruity,” she says to Life & Style. “I drank things that wouldn’t induce a hangover so I could stick with the gym. It was hard, but it was worth it.” Since filming of the third season ended in September, she has cut alcohol altogether. “I want to be on point, and drinking gets in the way,” she says.

Another factor in JWoww’s weight loss is her new beau, Roger Matthews, a Toms River, N.J., bodybuilder. Jenni tells Life & Style that since the two first got cozy in August, Roger has been training her for at least two of her five weekly workouts. Talk about great motivation!

Life & Style has the exclusive interviews with Kim Zolciak and NeNe Leakes about their epic, racially-charged battle on the Jan. 16 episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta.

“Tardy for the Party” singer Kim invited on-again, off-again friend NeNe on her tour bus, but instead of the two Housewives catching up on the latest gossip, all hell broke loose when NeNe accused Kim of treating Kim’s assistant, Sweetie, like a “slave” — NeNe’s word, not Kim’s. When Kim yelled back at NeNe, “F---you, bitch,” NeNe erupted and lunged at Kim.

“I’d never put my hands on somebody like that,” Kim, who’s currently five months pregnant, tells Life & Style. “NeNe just snapped.” Luckily, Kim’s entourage was able to restrain NeNe, who shockingly accused Kim of being a racist. But while no blood was shed, both women have suffered severe emotional scars that will stay with them forever.

“I wish I had followed my heart and not gotten on the bus,” says NeNe to Life & Style. "I will never talk to Kim again. Never. I want nothing to do with her." The feeling is mutual, says Kim: "I don’t need to be in a position where I am fearful."

For the complete interviews with Nene and Kim, pick up the new issue of Life & Style. On newsstands now!

In celebration of OWN’s “Your OWN Show” that airs Fridays at 9 pm, O, The Oprah Magazine asked SIX TV luminaries “What Was Your Big Break?”

The story featured in the February issue profiles Meredith Vieira, Suze Orman, Tom Colicchio, Ellen DeGeneres, Barbara Walters and Holly Robinson Peete – they each share the opportunity that made their careers and changed their lives.

Barbara Walters:

“I was a writer for the Today show when the so-called “Today Girl” was Maureen O’Sullivan, mother of Mia Farrow. She was a well regarded actress, but she couldn’t handle Today— the time cues, the hours. NBC needed a replacement for just 13 weeks, somebody they didn’t have to pay much—and there I was. And there I stayed for 13 years. Can you imagine? My whole career is made.”

Ellen DeGeneres:

“When I started out, I traveled the country doing street performances and small gigs. I lived in my car until I was discovered in a coffee shop in San Diego… wait, I’m sorry. I’m thinking of a documentary I saw about Jewel. My big break came on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I was ecstatic when I got booked and went crazy figuring out what to wear. (Sinbad actually gave me shopping advice, and I listened to him. That explains the Hammer pants.) Onstage, I “killed,” as they say. When I finished, I looked around everywhere—except at Johnny. I looked at the band, the audience, the lighting guy. When I finally looked at Johnny, he was leaning over the desk beckoning me to join him. I was the first female comedian he ever asked over to his couch. He said I was clever. I’ll never forget that.”

Meredith Vieira:

“I’d been hired by CBS News and I decided to get a perm. They overprocessed my hair and it started to break, so I had to chop it all off. On my first day—it was January— I wore a hat to work, and kept wearing it for several days because I didn’t want anyone to see my hair. When everybody did, they were shocked. Two weeks later, the president of CBS News said to me, “We’ve got an assignment—we’re sending you to Chicago.” I said, “Okay, when do I come back?” He said, “You’re not coming back.” I’ll never forget walking down Michigan Avenue in Chicago in the cold and wind, thinking, What have I done? This was during a recession—farmers were dealing with foreclosures, the Rust Belt was suffering. From the Chicago bureau, I was flying to Detroit and Indiana and all over the heartland. I was on the air pretty much every day, outdoors, talking to Dan Rather, in the hat. Those segments put me on the map. Not that I’m suggesting the road to success is a bad perm, but it certainly helped me.”

Suze Orman:

“My biggest break in life was losing all my money. I was working at a bakery in Berkeley, and my customers pooled $50,000 so I could open my own restaurant. I invested it at Merrill Lynch, where it was mismanaged; in four months, it was gone. I was devastated, but I had to rise to the occasion. So I learned all about finance and investing, went to Merrill Lynch’s training program, and became an executive there. Every loss leads you to a gain, and every no takes you hat much closer to a yes.”

Tom Colicchio:

“I was the chef de cuisine at Mondrian in New York City for three months. After my father passed away, I took some time off, then I went back to work, then I decided to go to France. I was bouncing from one thing to the next. Then I got a call asking me if I’d like to be chef at Mondrian—a big jump. A few months later, we got three stars in The New York Times. I was 26, no one really knew me—it was out of the blue, and it changed everything.”

Holly Robinson:

“When I auditioned for 21 Jump Street, I was fresh out of college, nervous, and broke. I drove an old Honda with bad brakes that made a horrible screeching sound, like Fred Flintstone at a stop sign. After the audition, just as I was starting my little Honda, the21 Jump Street producers walked into the parking lot. They heard that awful noise, looked at my car, looked at me, and I swear they thought, We have to give her the part because she’s got to get those brakes fixed! That afternoon I found out the role was mine.”

WEEKEND UP DATE” ANCHOR SETH MEYERS – “On Wednesday outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi transferred power to her successor John Boehner, and in a rare sign of affection between the rivals --- Look out Nancy! He's got a hammer.”

MEYERS – “The Republican effort to have the Constitution read aloud on Thursday was interrupted several times, including when readers skipped two pages, when a Democrat complained that passages regarding slavery were omitted and when a birther in the gallery shouted out that President Obama was not eligible to be in office. And it didn't help that this music was playing the whole time.”

MEYERS – “Democrat Jerry Brown was sworn in Monday as governor of California, nearly 28 years after he last served in that same office. Brown says that his first order of business is to find that loose floorboard where he hid his weed.”

MEYERS – “It was reported Thursday that just three weeks after Elizabeth Edwards died, John Edwards proposed to his mistress Rielle Hunter. So the two of them can look forward to many, many years of being booed in restaurants.”

MEYERS – “According to a new poll, President Obama's approval rating is at 50 percent, its highest level in seven months. Of course, it helps that the poll was taken at a Brown University drum circle.”

MEYERS – “A new edition of the Mark Twain classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is being published that will remove all mentions of the "N" word. Worse, they plan to replace them with ‘homey.’"

MEYERS – “Claire Buffie, who is currently Miss New York, said that when she competes in the upcoming Miss America pageant she will be championing gay rights as part of her campaign. Sounds like someone finally figured out who still watches the Miss America pageant.”

MEYERS – “Zookeepers in Germany entered the zoo's lion enclosure this week after a baby penguin wandered in and stayed there for a day. But by the time they arrived it was too late: all the lions were dead.”

MEYERS – “It was reported that Mickey Rourke is planning to remove his two front teeth so that he can play a famous Rugby star in a new movie. Oh no, then his face might look weird."

MEYERS – “A couple in Pennsylvania, who got married on New Year's Day, followed up the ceremony by joining members of the Polar Bear Club in jumping into a local river. In what I'm guessing was a real rollercoaster day for the man's penis.”

MEYERS – “According to new research, senior citizens who walk faster will live longer. Cuz ya know, that light's not gonna stay red forever.”

MEYERS – “Jersey Shore star Jenni "JWoww" Farley this week asked a judge to bar her ex-boyfriend from releasing nude pictures of her before and after she had surgery. I guess she wants people to think of her as "JWoww" and forget when she used to be ‘JMeh.’"

MEYERS – “According to new research, people attending heavy metal concerts can give themselves brain damage if they move their heads more than 75 degrees while keeping beat with the music. Cuz if there are two things metal heads are good at, it's geometry and caring about what happens to their brains."
